Dr. J. Todd Smith
J. Todd Smith, MD is a Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in orthopedic spine surgery. He has over 25 years experience and his practice includes cervical spine, minimally invasive spine, robotic spine surgery. and revision spine surgery. He has served on the advisory board for a National Tissue Bank, has been a faculty advisor to residents and has been a speaker and surgical instructor for spine surgery including minimally invasive techniques.
Payton Berry
Physician Assistant
Originally from Trussville, Alabama, Payton joined Dr. Smith’s team in February 2026. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Troy University in 2023 before going on to graduate from Samford University’s Physician Assistant program in December 2025. Payton is passionate about making a meaningful difference in her patients’ lives and values the opportunity to work alongside a dedicated and supportive team. Outside of the clinic, she enjoys spending time at the lake, attending country music concerts, and making memories with family and friends. She also loves spending time with her golden retriever, who holds a special place in her heart.
Kelli McLaughlin
Registered Nurse
Kelli is a Birmingham native and a Registered Nurse who joined Dr. Smith’s team in 2023. She earned her nursing degree from Wallace State Community College and pursued additional studies in criminal justice and psychology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Kelli is passionate about staying current with medical research and finds great fulfillment in celebrating her patients’ milestones and achievements. Coming from multiple generations of nurses, she is proud to carry on her family’s legacy while creating her own path in healthcare. Outside of work, Kelli enjoys volunteering with local nonprofits and churches, attending live music events, and spending quality time with family and friends.
Malea Robinson
Office Manager
A Birmingham native, Malea has been an integral part of Dr. Smith’s practice since 2004. With over two decades of experience, she takes pride in supporting the team and helping create a welcoming, positive environment for both patients and staff. Outside of the office, Malea enjoys traveling, exploring trails with friends on her side-by-side, and spending time at the lake. Whether she’s camping in her RV, boating, or simply relaxing by the water, she loves making memories with family and friends.
Shardona Jones
Clinical Coordinator
Originally from Lincoln, Alabama, Shardona was a dedicated member of Dr. Smith’s team for 17 years. As Clinical Coordinator, she values the relationships she has built with her coworkers and enjoys being part of a close-knit team. Outside of the office, Shardona loves spending quality time with her two daughters, relaxing at the lake, exploring scenic waterfalls on hiking adventures, and unwinding with her favorite Hallmark and Lifetime movies.
Kenlee Hood
Marketing Manager
Kenlee joined Dr. Smith’s team in 2025 as Marketing Manager. Having called Birmingham home for most of her life, she enjoys building meaningful relationships with patients, colleagues, and referring practices throughout the community. She values the opportunity to continually expand her knowledge of the healthcare industry while strengthening professional connections and supporting the growth of the practice. Outside of work, Kenlee enjoys traveling, reading, and making memories with friends and family.
